Fuzhou used to be a major gateway to the outside world. Over 2.5 million overseas Chinese, in no less than 50 countries, claim to have ancestors from Fujian.
The history of the city dates back to the third century AD when it was known as Yechang. It is also still substantially influenced by Buddhism--altogether there are six state-listed key temples in Fuzhou (Yong Quan Temple, Xichan Temple, Linyang Temple, Dizang Temple, Wanfu Temple and Xuefeng Temple).
The city is also known for its profusion of springs, renowned as "spring city". Nowadays many of the hotels claim hot spring water supplies, most notably the Hot Spring Hotel.
The Yu Hill and West Lake Garden are decent parks and the giant banyan trees scattered about are of twisted beauty. True Maoists should also head for Wuyi Square to honour the massive statue of the great helmsman. Chinese Net Friends" Recommendations:

I don"t encourage you to live in Beijiangbin or take the buses within Fuzhou city. There are many thieves
on Fuzhou"s buses. *
My favorite scenic spots of Fuzhou are Qingyun Mountain and Shibachongxi in Yongtai. They are all national standard scenic spots. Personally, I don"t think Qingyun Mountain is less attractive than Yandang Mountain. Shibachongxi is of high mountains and valleys.
How to get to Qingyun Mountain: Take a bus from Fuzhou West Station or North Station to Yongtai County, then take a taxi(10Y) to arrive at Qingyun Mountain. There are six scenic areas taking two days to visit.
How to get to Shibachongxi: Take a bus from West Fuzhou Station or North Fuzhou Station to Minhou Nanyu, then take a taxi to arrive at Shibachongxi.
