Transportation within the city

By subway (MTR): The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is in operation between 6:00 am and 1:00 am the next day.  It is very convenient for getting around Hong Kong and visiting many of its attractions.  Fares range from HK$4 to HK$26.

By train (KCR): The KCR (Kowloon Canton Railway) provides a commuter train service from Kowloon, through the New territories and to the boundary with Mainland China.  It operates between 5:28 am and 1:00am the next day and fares range from HK$3.5 to HK$36.5.

By tram: This is a fun way to explore the north of Hong Kong Island. Each trip costs HK$3. Tramlines run from Happy Valley to Kennedy Town.  You can board at the back of the tram and then pay the exact fare when alighting at the front.

The Peak Tram: The Peak Tram is a funicular railway and one of the city¡¯s most popular tourist attractions.  It began operation in 1888 and is the quickest way to climb the steep angle to The Peak¡¯s summit.  The Lower Terminus is on Garden Road near Central (you can take a bus from the Star Ferry Pier).  The fare is HK$20 one-way or HK$30 return and it runs from 7am to 12 midnight, departing every 15 minutes.

Star ferry:  The Star ferry is legendary in Hong Kong and a big tourist attraction that you should not miss. It has been serving Hong Kong people for over 100 years, connecting Hong Kong Island with Kowloon Peninsula. To some extent it is the symbol of Hong Kong.  Everyday day many commuters use it to get to work and it is also a great way to view Hong Kong¡¯s harbor.  The main service between Central and TsimShaTsui runs between 06:30 and 23:30 everyday.

Transport Tip: Please note that cars drive on the left hand side of the road in Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong tend to drive very fast, so please be careful when crossing the street.
