The name of Tianjin was granted by Zhudi, an emperor in Ming Dynasty, meaning the place where the heavenly emperor lingered.
Tianjin was considered the most important military fortresses. Any "aliens" would have to get through Tianjin for direct access to the capital, a mere 80km to the west. In 1860, after the First Opium War, Tianjin was further expanded as a business and communications center. By the end of the 19th century, it had grown into a bustling center with a population of approximately 300,000 citizens.
The tourism of the city is growing in a fast pace, too. The famous scenic spots are Pan Mountain, Hai River and Tanggu. Tianjin Harbor is the greatest man made harbor in north China. In the streets and alleys, there are distinctive little foreign buildings.
