Anhui province has a number of specialties that differentiate it from other areas
around China. Key specialties include pottery, Gujing wine, traditional medicines, the
four treasures of Chinese calligraphy, tea, handicrafts, Buddhist souvenirs, dried fungi
and more. Hefei is one of
the more convenient places to buy most of the general goods that can be found all around
the province. The city can be a little expensive, however, and often it will be nicer to
head to the producing regions rather than picking it up "second hand" here. The most interesting shopping specialties in the two most famous mountains, Jiuhuashan and
Huangshan, are in naturally
produced goods, that include dried fungi, herbal medicines, bamboo carvings, intricately
ornate walking sticks, and the tea. Jiuhuashan, a Buddhist enclave, is also good for
Chinese religious artifacts, although most of the stalls here sell almost anything, so
that finding interesting goods is a trial. |
