Hebei Introduction

Hebei is a large province with a population of around 65 million. Although fairly mountainous and unprofitable in the north, the province has become another industrial and agricultural heartland in the flatter plains to the south. With Tianjin as its model, these areas have been profiting from the trickle down effects of the Tianjin and Beijing growth.

There are a number of sights in the rugged north. One is a beautiful stretch of China"s most famous sight, the Great Wall, whose western end runs in to the sea near the city of Shanhaiguan. The beaches around the Qinhuangdao area are the summer retreat of the highest echelons of the Communist Party. The Qing Dynasty imperial summer retreat of Chengde, despite a long period of neglect, still contains some fantastic temples, the biggest imperial gardens in China and some good food!
