The climate within Hebei varies from region to region, making this a hard to pin down
province.
In the coastal areas that look over the Bohai Gulf, around Qinhuangdao and Beidaihe, the
weather is generally fairly pleasant all year.
In the mountainous areas to the north, the climate is harsh, with
temperatures dropping to almost uninhabitable levels in the winter and bringing drought,
with sandstorms scouring the land in spring, and the heavy showers of summer turning
everything sodden. If history is anything to go by, however, the area is climatically good
for those sweltering in the capital, as was shown by the Qing Dynasty officials who fled
to Chengde every summer.
The plains further south are also often struck by drought, that makes the
new wave of farming that has struck the region a hardy business.
Temperatures in the province as a whole, can drop as low as -21 degrees C. in freezing
winter, and rise as high as 38 degrees C. in summer. |
