Henan, with its history as one of the founders of Chinese civilisation, is a good place
to come for those after an antique bargain, although distinguishing between these and
fakes is not always that easy. This area is also renowned as a center for many of China"s
most famous herbal medicines, those wishing to test these remedies should head to the
nearest local pharmacy. The various towns and cities here all have different specialties
that the veteran shopper should check out. In Zhengzhou,
there is the least selection, although you may pick up some interesting porcelain figures
and laquerware. For decent gifts head to Kaifeng, which has
some good markets and ancient shopping streets, the
New Year Posters and
Embroidery here are a
good purchase. The best of places for souvenirs, however, is Luoyang, another of the
ancient capitals. Luoyang has many good arts, crafts and antique stores, and some nice
markets. The best article here has got to be the
Tang Dynasty three-colour
glazed pottery. For kung fu fanatics, there is nowhere in the world more famous
than Songshan, and
the Shaolin Monastery. Weapons are the
big thing here, and anything from curved swords to lethal throwing stars can be bought
from all over the place. If you are looking for something a little more gentle there are
many books to be found here, explaining and philosophising on the ancient art of Wushu. |
