Shopping availability in Inner Mongolia is relatively dire. Outside of the capital
there is little to recommend, despite the wealth of traditional products that the
autonomous region and its northern neighbor used to produce. Things can still be found
however, and highlights include traditional weaponry, products produced from nature (such
as
camel hair products,
various medicinal herbs, leather clothing & various other animal skin products),
cashmere sweaters and Mongolian carpets. Various artifacts also make interesting presents,
from silver & bronze ware to jade trinkets. Hohhot remains
the best place for souvenir hunters. Foreigners should watch what you buy, however, since
many of the products that can be found on the streets, including swords, knives, many animal skins, various
medicinal drugs and more, may give you trouble at customs. |
